From the Author:
For many it is a world that is no more. The Bronx, the old neighborhood, the neighbors, the old school, the libray and the playground. I have tried to reconstruct some of my memories and pepper it (or should I say salt it, Kosher salt, of course) with some wisdom supplied by such notables as Tanta Pesha, Sadie with the Teeth Gertie with the Hair and Lillie with the Nails. And of course there's always Mama who informs us that everyday, you should have a good laugh and a clove of raw garlic. So how bad could that be? Come and share some of these stories with me. I guarantee a few smiles, a couple of chuckles and maybe even a tear or two. But, after all, isn't that what life is all about?
Review:
"His anecdotal memories resonate with Yiddishkeit, wisdom, and just plain humor." -- The Jewish Community Voice (NJ)
"His pieces are...effective and worthwhile. Oy, so worthwhile!" -- Jewish News (Denver, CO)
"...sure to bring smiles to readers' faces." -- Atlantic City Press (NJ)
"...unabashedly nostalgic...mines a vein of long-gone Yiddishkeit, offering a message with Jewish spice." -- Jewish Exponent (Philadelphia, PA)
Simply put, reading Leo Lieberman is like going back home to Bubbie revisiting a world of long-lost Yiddishkeit when all was warm and cozy and the shtetle still alive even here in America. But you dont necessarily have to be Jewish to love Memories of Laughter and Garlic. If you appreciate good writing, wit and wisdom sprinkled with Yiddishisms reminiscent of Sholom Aleichem this book is for you. Lieberman consistently manages to keep things fresh indeed, as if hed gone back to Bubbie for more material. But of course, its Liebermans world, a world some of us still remember with great fondness and in case we forget thats where Lieberman comes in, to bring it all back. If not for our Leo Liebermans, a significant portion of our cherished past would no longer even be a memory. For that reason, all humor aside, this collection is essential. -- Jack Engelhard, Author, Indecent Proposal
