Sally Strackbein thought her Year 2000 food storage program was almost complete when a January ice storm took her electricity away for two days. Living without electricity in a cold, all-electric home, was a real Y2K test. When she went to the pantry to get food for the family, she gagged. She found cans of beans, Spam, chili, turkey, vegetables and fruits. None of it was appealing enough to turn into a meal. The thought of surviving on what was in her pantry depressed her. Y2K Kitchen, The Book, is Sally's answer to the question, "What food do I buy and what do I do with it?" There are many other books on how to store whole wheat and rice and pack them so they will last for 10 years. Sally's book helps ordinary people prepare for the Year 2000, or any other emergency, by adding to their normal shopping lists. Not only does Y2K Kitchen, The Book, tell how to make tasty meals from canned food, it also answers the question, "What is the Year 2000 problem, and what does it mean to the average person?" The book is full of articles about Y2K, why everyone needs to prepare, how to talk your family and friends about Y2K, as well as loads of easy, practical and delicious recipes

Sally Strackbein is a computer professional, as well as the family cook. She started programming computers professionally in 1969. In those days, computers were as big as an RV. They didn't have disk drives, but used punch cards and magnetic tape instead.
She is worried about the Year 2000 problem because decades of experience in major software and hardware conversions and upgrades. In 1983, she realized that the Year 2000 would show up in her lifetime, so she started programming computers with four digit years. When someone more recently mentioned the Year 2000 to her, she didn't think much about it because, certainly, other programmers had to have seen what she saw. What she now knows is: if they saw it, they were unable to convince their bosses that it was important.
