Synopsis

Aimed at the specific needs of African Americans, this book is both a complete medical guide and a human exploration of the emotional aspects of cancer. African Americans have different types of cancers in greater proportions than other races do and often have diminished access to health care and treatment. Topics include the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of over 20 types of cancer, how to work with the health-care system, and the importance of both diet and faith to treatment. Personal stories illustrate the human aspects of the disease, including the joy of successful treatment and the distress when the outcome is death.

Reviews

"By 1992, the age-adjusted [cancer] mortality rates were 32 percent higher for Blacks than for all races combined," and cancer rates in general are higher among African Americans, assert physicians George Rawls and Frank Lloyd, who, with Herbert Stern, present Managing Cancer: The African American's Guide to Prevention, Diagnosis and Treatment. Attributing the increased rate of cancer among blacks primarily to poverty, the authors entreat readers to take charge of their own health. They offer dietary and other preventative measures, and cover the specifics of diagnosis and of treatments, including holistic "Living with Cancer" information.

African Americans face unique challenges and concerns when confronting cancer. Statistically, blacks fare worse in terms of higher incidence, higher mortality rates, and poorer prognosis. Currently, there is a need for high-quality cancer information specifically geared to the African American community a need that, unfortunately, is not met here. The surgeon authors (Rawls is a surgeon and Lloyd is a surgical oncologist) examine the medical and social aspects of cancer. First, they introduce readers to cancer basics, discuss the role of diet in prevention, and offer overviews of the types of cancer that most frequently occur in blacks. While the information provided is adequate, much of it can be found elsewhere, with too little of the content exclusive to cancer in the black community. The remainder of the book explores the question of healthcare (in)equality and provides suggested coping strategies for living with the disease. All in all, despite its flaws, this book is sorely needed, and one hopes that it will reach an audience that has too long been neglected. Recommended for public libraries.
