About the Author:
Arthur D. Robbins is a psychologist with a practice on Manhattan's Upper West Side. He holds a bachelors in English from Queens College, a doctorate in psychology from New School University and a doctorate in French and Romance Philology from Columbia University, where he specialized in 18thcentury political thought. From Voltaire he learned that humor and politics can be brought together in a work of fiction. This is his first novel.
From Library Journal:
Combining satire and politics can offer powerful insights in the hands of a Voltaire or a Jonathan Swift. Psychologist Robbins has set himself on that path with this screed about lying and its toxic effects on the American political system. Journalist Jeremiah Greenfield, described as a simple liar toiling in the vineyards of deceit, and his sidekick Nick Belladonna get hooked by CRAP (Committee To Resurrect the American Presidency), which plans to run Jeremiah for president in the 2004 election. Greenfield thrashes about for ideas and comes up with one hilarious riff about the differences between Republicans and Democrats, among other zany notions. Despite lots of campaign money and a love interest, things don!t work out, and poor Jeremiah is history. Undeniably, Robbins has a talent for satire, but fiction is perhaps not its most felicitous partner. A labored plot, unpleasant characters, and relentless moralizing cannot save this first novel from its smug cleverness. However, humor is a volatile quality, and the book will find its fans, so large libraries will want to include it in their election-season buys."Barbara Conaty, Library of Congress
