"Snake Hunting the Carolina Tin Fields" explores every facet of tin and its appeal to snakes. It is far more than a "how-to" book, as the author draws upon 25 years of snake hunting, and relates dozens of experiences with serpents in the Carolinas. Told with humor and often poking fun at himself and his companions, this book will appeal to amateur and professional herpetologists alike. This book helps fill the need for more snake hunting adventures in the Southeast as described earlier by Kauffeld and Bartlett.
John W Kemnitzer Jr likes snakes, and says he can't remember a time when he didn't like them. Even his birth year, 1941 is the Year of the Serpent in the Chinese zodiac. His snake-hunting experiences began at age 11, after moving from New York City to Lindenhurst, Long Island. John remembers that many parts of western Suffolk County were not yet housing developments, shopping centers, and golf courses. He explored every swamp and woodlot within hiking distance of home. So began a life-long interest in catching and keeping snakes. Beginning in 1973, John spent every Easter vacation pursuing snakes in the Carolinas. Coinciding with these trips, John began presenting snake programs. He used slides of snakes from the Carolinas, as well as slides of snakes from three extensive summer trips covering most of North America. Now retired from teaching, John and his wife, Mary, reside in beautiful northeastern Dutchess County, New Yo! rk. They are available to present snake programs at outdoor education centers, schools, museums, and community events.
