Dessa Byrd Reed was born in Charleston, Illinois. She attended Eastern Illinois State College and the University of Illinois. Dessa and her late husband moved to California many years ago where she has had several careers including homemaker, advertising representative for an international newspaper, interior designer, practitioner for her church, as well as chaplain in two county jails.
After seeing the benefits of writing poetry in her own recovery, she now teaches poetry workshops and speaks to organizations encouraging others to find inspiration and direction in creating their own verse. Dessa also sponsors poetry contests in several local schools helping young people discover their poetic voice and communicate their feelings.
