Synopsis

The author uses the principles in his book, Refinery Process Modeling, to present a stepwise, simulator-independent model building procedure. For this problem, a distillate stream consisting of both virgin and cracked stocks is hydrotreated to remove nitrogen and sulfur, as well as to improve the diesel properties by saturation of olefinic and aromatic compounds.

A modified black box reactor is used to predict the product from the hydrotreating reactor.

The model provides useful information, such as the hydrogen consumed in sulfur and nitrogen removal, the hydrogen consumed in saturation and cracking reactions, and the hydrogen solution losses from the system.
