Synopsis

This is a novel about sex, religion and baseball. A Mennonite-Canadian farmer becomes the greatest baseball player in history while stumbling and bumbling over the hills of love; a young woman is stalked by a vacuum cleaner salesman from California; a black woman from North Bay manages the Blue Jays into the World Series; and we're just getting into the wind-up. Armin Wiebe, author of The Salvation of Yasch Siemens and The Second Coming of Yeeat Schpanst, says "Janzen Kooistra has created a fast moving novel with a lovable character who will make readers laugh and cry and revel in this glorious human condition we know as life. I would say it's more inventive than W.P. Kinsella's "if you build it he will come "Shoeless Joe" ... ; it's just as literary and for sure, a whole lot funnier."

From the Publisher

Shoo-fly Dyck is a tour de force. Reflective and festive, sensuous and muscular, it interlaces heartbreak and high comedy, conflicting pleasures, and ecstasy in a verbal borscht of uncommon pungency. In one amazing summer, a lonely, workaholic, Mennonite nerd becomes one of the gods of baseball. Richard 'Shoo-fly' Dyck is trying to save the family farm from bankruptcy, when a friend discovers Shoo-fly's ability to throw a baseball at 107 miles per hour -- with either arm.
