About the Author

A warm, personable lecturer, author/educator Mark Linden O'Meara relates his knowledge and life experience in transitions, letting go, and healing in a thought provoking, nurturing and personal manner. In completing his Masters Degree in Education (Counseling Psychology) Mark is near the completion of a powerful transition that stemmed from challenging life experiences that resulted in the creation of the book "Here I Am: Finding Oneself through Healing and Letting Go" - a comprehensive guide to working through emotions, rediscovering oneself, developing healthier relationships and experiencing a healthier lifestyle.

After completing his Bachelor of Management Science in Information Systems, Mark began working as a consultant. At the same time Mark experienced a number of losses that, as one mentor noted, fundamentally changed his outlook and sense of self. This trying period resulted in the recollection of painful childhood memories as well as the need to heal from these and other events. Through the use of self-expression, emotional catharsis, and challenging his beliefs about himself and others, he has experience a reconnection with joy and a deepening of his friendships.

As a result of these changes Mark has experienced significant personal growth and satisfaction. Mark has been thoroughly enjoying his teaching experience at the community college level for over 5 years, has presented at professional conferences, and has been featured on radio and TV.

In our quest to heal from troubles many of us have been told to "let go". Although the advice seems appropriate, many of us do not know how to let go. The actual process of letting go is something we may not have experienced, and we may therefore need to learn how to achieve this. I believe that letting go is a complicated process and that there are many factors that facilitate or hinder this process. While much of this book focuses on the nature of letting go, it also focuses on the nature of healing, for by learning about the process of healing, we learn the process of letting go.

In Here I Am, I hope to describe the notions, ideas, techniques and attitudes that facilitate letting go and healing. In this process, you too can learn and experience the benefits of getting in touch with your emotional self and begin to develop attitudes that will promote healing. In doing so, we can become less fearful of our emotions and learn to let go of them. We can learn to develop healthier emotional attitudes and behaviors that will affect our relationships and friendships. It is also about discovering or expanding our rainbow of emotions and creative talents that exist within ourselves, learning to nurture ourselves and beginning to promote healthy thinking and behavior. This book, therefore, is also about better communication, closer relationships, greater joy, and a greater sense of connection with our selves and with others. All of these things are tied together in our ability to express, communicate and resolve our emotions.

Until a few years ago, my life was greatly affected by a backlog of emotion. A difficult childhood as well as a number of losses, combined with the avoidance of my emotions, led me to a troubled state of crisis. I was fatigued, isolated and my thinking was troubled. A friend confided to me that no matter how hard I tried to have a good time, it seemed that something was pulling me down. I was in a great deal of emotional pain, yet could not communicate this to others, nor could I admit it to myself. I kept myself very busy, sometimes compulsively, yet even though I realized I needed to slow down, could not. Although emotionally wound up, I was also extremely numb to my own feelings. I have been told that I gave the impression I wanted to be left alone even though my heart longed for companionship. It is from this state of isolation and numbness that I moved to a sense of serenity and connectedness with others. This change came about as I learned to deal with my emotions more effectively and challenged the beliefs held within those emotions.

I have experienced the reality that the effects of traumas, challenges and life experiences are not permanent and that healing can take place. Through some trial and error, the support of others, seemingly chance meetings with people, and reading the appropriate book at the appropriate time, I experienced a major shift in my emotional health. I have worked hard and diligently at getting in touch with my emotions, releasing them and healing. The work has paid off! I developed a much deeper understanding of myself, my past, and the emotions I was feeling in the present. In my healing process, I developed new friendships, changed careers, developed a healthier approach to myself and improved my decision making. I no longer long for companionship, but recognize what I have to offer and bring to others. My self-esteem has improved. I am more assertive, and I experience a greater degree of joy in my life. I am now more energetic, have achieved better relationships and friendships, and definitely have greater joy and excitement in my life. Friends tell me that I smile more often and that I walk taller. When issues arise, I am dealing mostly with the current situation rather than my emotional history. Without emotional baggage, others find it easier to communicate with me. When issues come up in a relationship, I can deal with them more effectively, having dealt with my past. I have begun to live my life in the way that I believe is a dream come true. Simply reminding myself of these improvements makes my day better!

This book is the result of my healing process and describes what I have learned during that time. It is hoped that the information and techniques in this book will help you in your goal of emotional healing. In reading this book, I would like you to keep in mind that there is no right or wrong way to go about healing and letting go. Each of us are unique and therefore the techniques or solutions that you choose may be different from those someone else would choose. The images and experiences that you related to will also be unique. As a result, I have not included case studies in this book as it would not be possible to include the depth and subtleties of any one individual's experience. In reading about the ideas and techniques I present, I suggest that you examine your own life to see how they apply to you. Try to apply them in your own unique way to your own life and situation. I hope that you create your own experience from reading these pages.

In doing so, I believe that your emotional healing will allow you to feel more joy and to be more expressive. It will unlock your creativity and spontaneity and lead to better family relationships, friendships and a greater degree of understanding of yourself and others. One of the greatest challenges to which we can rise is healing ourselves. It is an act we do for ourselves that can have profound effects on our lives and our futures.
