A personal account of the idyllic life a boy and his family enjoyed on the island of Guernsey (a British island, but closer to the Normandy coast of France than to Britain; Sarnia is the Norman name for Guernsey)until, on June 19th, 1940, their life--and that of all islanders--was abruptly disrupted. German troops were sweeping through France and were less than 20 miles from Guernsey. Parents were told that the islands' schools were to be evacuated to mainland England and that they had to decide whether to send their children with the schools or keep them on an island that almost certainly would become German-occupied territory. The author describes the idyllic life he experienced growing up in green, pastoral Guernsey and then, as a 15-year old, how it felt to be shoved into the hold of a cattle ship and transported first to a south-coast port in England and then to smoky, gray Lancashire.
