Sam Welch was born in Ashland, Oregon in 1955. He grew up, for the most part in the small coastal town of Brookings, Oregon. In 1974 he joined the Navy, and spent most of his six-plus years of enlisted duty in the Western Pacific. During his stint as a sailor, he married and started a family which eventually grew to consist of a wife and four children. Honorably discharged in 1981, he returned to Southern Oregon where he worked a myriad of jobs including mechanic, steel fabricator, saw mill and plywood mill worker, and finally plumber. After a mill closure in 1995, Sam wrote "What's Your Problem, Cowboy?" The book was published on the Online Reader and enjoyed some popularity. Sam followed by writing a screenplay which received high praise from an agent, who later decided to use his own similar theme in a movie under a different title. Discouraged, Sam put the book aside, allowing it to gather dust. Recently he decided to lift it from the mothballs and share it with the reading public.
