Artá D. Banks served on President Clinton's nonpartisan Adoption 2002 panel and is a board member for Angels Unaware, a support group for families infected and affected by HIV/AIDS. She lives in Aurora, Colorado.

"My maternal grandparents had twelve children. One can only imagine how lively that household must have been. The following is a true story that happened when my uncle was a little boy. Uncle A.D. was going out to play. My grandmother (who we called "Madear") looked at him and said, 'Your shoes are on the wrong feet.' He replied, 'But, these are the only feet I've got.'

A funny yet provocative statement that reminds me we need to use what we have. Sometimes it is easy to say or think that we can't do something because we are not smart enough, talented enough, rich enough, or pretty enough.
