Tom Stern, MD, is a national record-holding swimmer, an avid traveler/adventurer and a Stanford graduate. Following college, he put himself through medical school by picking fruit with migrant farm workers and riding the American railroads as a brakeman, watchman, and freight train conductor. During one of his 60+ trips abroad, Stern discovered gold on a remote island in the South China Sea. After his discovery, he operated a gold mine until a rash of killings forced closure. This, along with his experiences in five expeditions searching for the Yamashita Gold, inspired his first novel, Gold Fever. His second novel, Vatican Gold, was published in early 2003.
