9780970624420: Write Up a Storm! A Writing Curriculum (2nd Grade)

"Write Up A Storm!" gives the teacher step-by-step instruction to build competent and confident writers. It includes lesson plans and activities in an organized, sequential, and carefully structured manner that will provide your students with the skills they need for effective writing. In addition, "Write Up A Storm!" clearly aligns with the standards. Focused writing instruction and practices spiral throughout "Write Up A Storm!" not only within each grade level, but also from grade level to grade level thus avoiding the isolated lesson dilemma. As the concepts spiral, students are expected to apply previously learned concepts, and be able to control interactions with new concepts. The students learn to generalize the writing skills into different content areas (across the curriculum) and within a variety of genres. "Write Up A Storm!" provides scaffolds and carefully lays a foundation of concepts. The concepts build upon one another. Each layer takes students through a process then provides practice. Structured writing tasks are assigned to emphasize the practice of newly learned skills together with the implementation of previously learned skills. Vocabulary and the construction of sound sentences both simple and complex are emphasized. If students can become proficient and master writing sound sentences, then moving to the next level is fairly simple. The final stages include paragraphing and essay writing in a variety of genres. All the while, students are practicing their writing skills while they go through the writing process which includes editing and revising.
