Juan Quezada retells for his grandson how he rediscovered how the ancient Casas Grandes people of Mexico made their especially fine painted clay pots, became a celebrated potter, and created a new industry for his isolated village.

This book is the only one on this world-famous artist that is entirely in Juan Quezada's own words; his signature on the flyleaf states "This is what happened." The designs on the pottery illustrated are taken directly from his pottery exixting at the time of the story's events, the locale is realistic, complete with the portraits of Juan's family goat and dogs. Since 1976, the year that anthropologist Spencer McCallum stumbled upon three of Juan's early pots in a Demming, NM swap shop and doggedly back-tracked them to Juan, events unfolded that led to the utilization of the ancient trade route of The Gran Chichimeca by modern Casas Grandes Paquimé ceramics. Today, most major museums display work from Mata Ortiz and Juan Quezada, busloads of scholars, buyers and tourists descend upon the small village of Mata Ortiz in Northern Chihuahua. Student exchange programs are in operation, a sustained economic recovery is thriving, and videos are shown on PBS. The engaging warmth of over 400 accomplished potters hasn't diminished. Juan has been recognized by the President of Mexico for several awards; he continues to dig his many colors of clay from the magical mountains, and fire his hand pinched pottery one at a time over a simple but technically sophisticated fire in a kiln made from a terra cotta pot with fuel of manure or wood.
This book was written by Juan Quezada. It is his story, told in his words. His grandson Chato is his constant shadow. Juan would like all readers to know they are welcome to come and visit his home.
