Synopsis

Twelve-year-old Nicolas de La Salle and his family sailed to La Louisiane (French Louisiana) with Governor Iberville to start a French settlement on the Gulf coast. Nicolas's father was with the explorer, Robert Cavelier de La Salle, when he reached the mouth of the Mississippi River in 1682 and claimed the vast territory for France.

Now with high hopes for a better life, Nicolas's family has come to La Mobile to help the young leader, Bienville, build the capital of La Louisiane. Will Nicolas be able to live up to his father's expectations and become brave and trustworthy? Will he solve the mystery of the massacre?

About the Author:

Anne Chancey Dalton likes mystery and adventure. And since historical research is similar to solving mysteries, she has traveled from Canada to cemeteries in Texas to find clues. She has participated in achaeological digs in Virginia and at Old Mobile and Fort Morgan in Alabama. Anne has performed in dinner theaters in Florida, clowning in Costa Rica, and historical interpretations around the USA and in England. She enjoys white-water rafting through the tropical rain forests of Costa Rica.

A freelance writer for twenty-five years, Mrs. Dalton's work includes stories for reading textbooks, church school curricula, and magazine articles.

Anne and her husband, Perry, live in Mobile, Alabama and Panama City, Florida. They have 10 children and 30-something grandchildren.

Dave C. Edwards, a native of Middletown, Ohio, is a freelance artist. He received his Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree from Miami University in Oxford, Ohio, and has lived on the Gulf Coast for over twenty years.

Dave's work reflects his love of nature and history, which he preserves in a visual art form. He uses a variety of mediums such as oils, acrylics, pen and ink, and watercolors to uniquely portray realistic scenes. His illustrations have appeared in national educational and historical magazines. Having studied and researched the history of the Gulf Coast for years, Dave is also involved in colonial-period living history programs in the southern coastal states.

The artist resides in Pensacola, Florida, with his wife and daughter.
