First Saturday, October 7th

The bubbles were bursting and her bath water had become lukewarm. Absently admiring her own long, slender legs, Cy Sweetly knew she'd indulged herself enough in the luxury of a leisurely hot bath. It was time for her favorite part of the daily ritual--plotting her future.

Next week she'd easily clinch the college homecoming queen title; then lining up a sponsor for the All-American College Coed Extravaganza contest would be a snap. Zack Packer, the auto dealer, was a good prospect.

Thoughts of wealth, fame, admiration and envy certain to follow after winning the national beauty pageant made her giddy and with effort Cy shifted gears to the reality of Saturday in the women's dormitory of Lombardy Teachers College.

Saturday's plans for the college sophomore were indefinite. Her annoying hometown boyfriend had arrived in Lombardy Friday evening, phoned three times, and even visited the dormitory uninvited. Behaving as badly was Professor Mortonson whining how much he wanted to spend Saturday afternoon with her.

Rising from the tub and patting herself dry, Cy had already taken steps to ditch both men and look up Zack Packer. October wasn't too early to begin her private campaign for contest sponsorship and he was a great looking guy. Probably mid-forties and ought to have plenty of money to lavish on a prospective mistress who by coincidence needed a sponsor for a national beauty pageant.

Toweling her long blonde hair dry, Cy heard the dormitory bathroom door open and suspecting it was Glenna, her roommate, snarled, "Keep out of here, Dum-dum."

'That girl is always snooping around. I can't wait to leave this school and that fat dork behind.'

Those were Cynthia Sweetly's final thoughts. Bent forward towel-drying her hair, the approach of another obscured, she was unaware of that presence until, caught by surprise, nylon hosiery was looped around her neck and quickly tightened.

No one heard the muffled shrieks of the strangling woman over the sudden shrill wail of the town's tornado test warning siren howling across Lombardy, Ohio.

The First Saturday tornado test alarm allowed time for last minute overkill cracking the back of the dead girl's skull with a heavy tool.

With some effort the lifeless nude body was dumped into the bathtub, the bath water drained, and the tub refilled with ice cold water completely immersing Cy Sweetly's body, her long blonde hair fanning her head like an underwater halo. Turning the bathroom thermostat back to sixty degrees was the finishing touch.

The still unoccupied dormitory rooms adjoining the shared bathroom were rechecked for a quick and quiet departure. No one was seen first peering out, then entering the hallway from the dead girl's room.

Few noted the undistinguished figure exiting the second floor down the broad staircase of Twyla Hall, crossing the dormitory lobby filled with students and visitors, and melding into the flow of a Saturday afternoon's Lombardy Teachers College campus life.
