The stories in this book are true. They are told here, exactly as they are remembered, from two-thirds of a century ago, along the Sangamon River in Piatt County, Illnois. When the boy in the stories grew up, he became a father, then a grandfather. He told the stories first to his children, then, later, to his grandchildren. "Henry liked walking in the woods because he saw raccoons and possums and skunks and foxes and frogs and snakes and crickets and beetles and butterflies and owls and hawks and crows and red-headed woodpeckers. Sometimes he found Indian arrowheads, pretty feathers, brightly colored leaves, and other nice things that he kept for a while-or forever."
