Life may have been slower-paced but it was not devoid of problems and hardships. Yet joyful moments were many and the warmth of close family ties is evident. The book is indeed a rich source of social history delineating the development of a small urban community. This book comes out of the Vanishing Generation Project. The primary purpose of the project is to record memories of the vanishing generation, for transcription and preservation in the Nordic Heritage Museum's archives. This book makes part of that material available in an informal format. The stories for a mosaic of a past way of life in Ballard. My goal as editor has been to produce a book that is interesting to read within the goals of the project.
