About the Author

Helga Ruge was born in Wiesbaden, Germany, and studied foreign languages at the Universities of Berlin and Marburg. In 1945, she met Neil Ruge, an American officer stationed in Germany. Four years later, the couple reunited when Neil returned to Europe as a United States Foreign Service Officer. They were married in Palermo, Sicily. Helga accompanied him to posts in Casablanca, London, Cardiff, Washington D.C., Munich, Morocco, and Guatemala City. In each place she immersed herself in local customs and culture, as well as diplomatic and social functions, all the while carrying on her family life which included her children Carl and Madeleine. Helga has also written her memoir, Flashbacks of a Diplomat's Wife.

This story was conceived during the height of the Cold War, which remains a vivid part of recent history even after the Wall finally came down. The lives of entire peoples and innumerable individuals were deeply affected by escalating tensions between East and West. A residue of impressions from the era inspired the author to weave the fabric of this wonderful love story between a young Sicilian immigrant and an American diplomat. Readers will appreciate the historic, geographic, and political aspects with their inherent tensions as the young lovers experience new lands and cultures she searching for the "promised land" in America; he laboring behind the Iron Curtain in a climate of suspicion.
