Joseph Keller McNeilly was born in 1949 in LaGrange, Indiana. In both tone and subject, much of his writing reflects the rural poverty of his childhood and his work life connections to the Amish communities of Northern Indiana and Southern Michigan. He received an MFA in Creative Writing from the University of British Columbia and did doctoral work in the History of Consciousness program at the University of California, Santa Cruz. His first book is Out Here (Chatoyant, 2001). He has taught creative writing and literature to college students for twenty-five years.
