The Boundary. The greatest feat of magic in the history of Madryn. An impenetrable barrier raised to imprison the Darklord Lorthas and end the centuries-long MageWar.
Now, the Boundary is weakening and the Darklord's shadow hovers over the land of Madryn. The Alliance of the Four Races is no more, the once-mighty Magi have been driven into hiding, and the only chance for victory lies in overcoming centuries of animosity and fear.
At the request of Alwellyn the Eternal, an Alrendrian delegation is en route to Lynnaei, the mythical capital of the Aelvin Empire. While Prince Martyn and the aging Lord Iban struggle to reopen trade with the reclusive Elves, the King's ward, Jeran Odara, meets secretly with the Emperor to gain his support in the upcoming war with the Darklord. And the ex-slave Dahr, barred access to Illendrylla, travels the Tribal Lands in search of the Garun'ah, long time allies of Alrendria.
But the forces of evil have not been idle. Tylor Durange, exiled Prince of Ra Tachan, has returned to claim his throne; Salos' ShadowMagi scour the land, seeking allies and sowing dissent; and even the Darklord, long believed trapped behind the Boundary, has found a way to access the minds of those most loyal to Alrendria.

Grade 7 Up-In this epic fantasy, two young men from different races are each on a quest to fulfill his destiny. Centuries ago, in the world of Madryn, four distinct races were allied against the Darklord Lorthas, a powerful wizard. He was defeated and imprisoned behind a magical Boundary, but now, nearly 1000 years later, the power is weakening and it's feared he might escape. Path of Glory (Tyrannosaurus, 2002) introduced orphaned Jeran and ex-slave Dahr, who embarked on a quest to reach the king with the news of the Boundary's failure. This book picks up right where that one left off. The teens are not safe from the Darklord, who has found a way to enter their dreams. At the same time, their enemies are plotting to strike a crushing blow to the king. This complex saga is populated with realistic characters who have human faults and foibles. Despite its length, the plot, told from various points of view, reads quickly and contains violence, intrigue, pathos, and much humor. It's recommended that the books be read in order; events mentioned in the first one are not fully explained and there are more volumes to come.--Sharon Rawlins, Piscataway Public Library, NJ
