At age twelve, still living in southern Italy, author Mario Caruso rode his first motorcycle. By age fourteen he was piloting his own bike through Italy's Campania region. Thirty-three years and a continent later he still rides motorcycles daily.
After residing in three American states he found a home Arkansas' mountains.
His writing and photography have appeared in national publications Rider and RoadBike magazines.
For the last thirty-three years I have lived and ridden motorcycles in Southern Italy, Florida, Colorado and now Arkansas. During that third of a century I have been fortunate to moto-tour twenty-six states, two Canadian Provinces and eight European countries. Not much by some people's standards but enough to give me a notion of what's out there.
Italian motorcycling is incomparable especially when a ristorante or trattoria is factored in, but it's difficult to make a living and terribly crowded. Colorado is an awe-inspiring state for motorcycling...three and a half months a year. As for Florida; I came to the conclusion that most Sunshine State motorcycle accidents are caused by boredom-induced sleeping at the handlebars.
Right between Colorado and Florida, like an oasis surrounded by uninspiring flat lands is Arkansas. Considering the 2.4 million acres of National Forest, two distinct mountain ranges, 600,000 acres of lakes, 49 state parks, 9700 miles of fishing or floating streams and a low population density, the state's official tag line 'The Natural State' fits. For two-wheel travelers though, The Motorcycle State is more like it.
The states well-funded road department courteously wound asphalt around and through all that natural beauty without bothering to blast away nasty topogrphical inconsistencies. For auto and RV drivers trying to quickly get from point to point the lack of stragiht thoroughfares is frustrating. For us foolish motorcyclists, it is a small, accessible paradise.
