Reviews

Grade 2-4-A childless king and queen have set up a contest to select their heir. The person who can bestow the full riches of the kingdom on the outgoing royals will inherit the throne. In archetypal fairy-tale form, the crown goes to the person displaying the greatest internal wealth. Material goods are beside the point. The narrative style, though ponderous, is readable in English, but a moderate disaster in Spanish, with odd circumlocutions and confusingly literal translations. The acrylic paintings enhanced with texturing are arresting, and the use of a parchmentlike background and small medallion inserts for separating English and Spanish text makes for an attractive page layout. A one-page glossary lists 10 words in English with the Spanish equivalent-quite unnecessary and adding nothing to the book.
