Jane Weber is an organic farmer and belongs to the Wisconsin Women's Sustainable Farming Network. She is also a re-enactor (C.E.L.T.S.)at the Bristo Renaissance Faire. She often likes to dress in clothing much like that worn during the Renaissance when she does readings of The Riches of Rangoberra, her first children's book.
Grade 2-4-A childless king and queen have set up a contest to select their heir. The person who can bestow the full riches of the kingdom on the outgoing royals will inherit the throne. In archetypal fairy-tale form, the crown goes to the person displaying the greatest internal wealth. Material goods are beside the point. The narrative style, though ponderous, is readable in English, but a moderate disaster in Spanish, with odd circumlocutions and confusingly literal translations. The acrylic paintings enhanced with texturing are arresting, and the use of a parchmentlike background and small medallion inserts for separating English and Spanish text makes for an attractive page layout. A one-page glossary lists 10 words in English with the Spanish equivalent-quite unnecessary and adding nothing to the book.
