A nationally known singer-songwriter, Ellis Pauls first hardcover book is filled with his journal entries, sketches, poetry and lyrics. The book is a beautiful insight into Ellis experiences along the road. Ellis Paul is now a national folk star and to many the quintessential Boston songwriter literate, provocative, urbanely romantic. -- The Boston Globe

Author's Preface September 13, 2001
I am writing just days after the tragedy of the terrorist attacks in Pennsylvania, NYC, and Washington DC-the deadline for this book is fast approaching and I have been asked to write a foreword regarding the material included and I can't separate my thoughts on these details from the broader ones of the tragedy. I can't help but think of the backdrop of where I live and how fortunate I am to be here.
I feel very lucky to be able to make music for a living, to write words that people can hear and can read without restraint from government or religion. Our economy gives people the freedom to create, explore and purchase music, literature and art. This country provides a freedom that is present in these ideas and words, and I hope you see the joy I take in writing them.
Initially, I was going to step into a discussion of what poetry vs. lyrics vs. spoken word was here, but it comes down to simply this-these are words and sketches I jotted down in journals, through letters, or lyrics. It's me-occasionally reckless, joyful, somber.
Thank you for opening these pages.
-Ellis Paul
Ellis was raised in a small town in northern Maine. For generations, his family has earned their living from potato farming.
This background greatly influenced his perception of the modern world.
