About the Author:
Betty Harmon Savoy grew up on the Eastern Shore Virginia as a sharecropper's daughter during the Great Depression and World War II. She earned a BS Degree in Business Education from the University of Maryland, where she also pledged and became a member of the Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority. She taught Business Education at several schools in the USA and Spain. At an early age, Betty established her personal relationship with God. Not always understanding what was going on in her life and that of her family, but she had a strong faith and believed that everything in their lives depended on God's grace and mercy. As a mere child, she wondered, what would happen if God died? As a child, she tested God and He proved Himself to her. Through all of her encounters, she never doublted that God had His hands on her. She searched for 50 years trying to find God's purpose for her life. Just when she was ready to give up, God called her into the ministry He had for her. After 16 years of faithful, dedicated service to her church, she retired, wrote and published her memoir with hopes that her experiences would be a blessing and help others struggling to find and seek God for their purpose or calling. Betty also feels that it's important for each of us to give something back as it has been given to us, and to leave something to help those coming after us. Betty now spend her time traveling, promoting her book, speaking engagements and still find time to work part-time at Ebenezer AME Bible Institute, Inc.
Review:
I endorse heartedly Betty Savoy's, Called, But Not To Preach. Many texts and treatises are written annually extolling the importance and biblical foundations of ordained pastoral ministry. Very little is written explaining the Call to lay ministry. With the publication of this powerful testimony, Mrs. Savoy has changed that. In a simple, clear and poignant style, she describes how God called her not to preach, but to give her gifts and skills as a lay woman in ministry at Ebenezer AME Church, Fort Washington, MD. The daughter of a sharecropper, a mother, wife and trusted Executive Assistant to her Pastors, Sis. Savoy has written an invaluable testimony to all Christians, but especially to lay people. I am pleased to commend this book to theological educators and to anyone looking for original reflection from a committed lay woman. Believe me, this essay will expand the understnding of students and church members as well. Louis-Charles Harvey, PhD, Former President of Payne Theolgical Seminary, Wilberforce. ...Just for the record, I could not put your book down and thus, for four straight hours, I read and simply enjoyed myself. ...Your discussion of your adult life, your quest for your purpose in life, and your arrival At Ebenezer were equally fascinating. Having only arrived at Ebenezer in 1999, I appreciated learning the history of the church from someone who was actually present. The more I read, the more I realized how much I had missed! ...Excluding the Bible, I very seldom read any book more than once. In the case of Called, But Not To Preach, I will have to make an exception! You are an excellent storyteller, and your descriptions are exceptionally vivid. You captive the attention of your audience to the extent that it seems as if we are right there with you, experiencing everything as it is taking place in your life. Continue to work for God and as you have already witnessed, He will give you the desires of your heart. Barbara Washington Smalling Author and Layperson --Barbara Washington Smalling
