9780972103190: Quiet Courage: The definitive account of Flight 93 and its aftermath

Synopsis

In Quiet Courage: The definitive account of Flight 93 and its aftermath, Dr. Kashurba uses first-person accounts to describe how a community in rural America came together to respond to the first battle of the war on terrorism. Since 9/11, history continues to unfold. Quiet Courage provides up-to-date accounts from Flight 93 families and citizens of Somerset County, Pennsylvania, committed to establishing a permanent memorial to the heroes of Flight 93. Overlying these first-hand accounts are the details of what occurred onboard UAL 93, the 9/11 plot and the ongoing investigations that are still front-page news. This is an American story using American voices showing American values at their best.

From the Author

I had the great honor and privilege to lend some small bit of support to a group of incredibly strong and wonderful people, the families of Flight 93. Despite all of their grief, amidst the apprehension of seeing the crash site that claimed the lives of their loved ones, they kept repeating the mantra, "I hope the people here know how much we appreciate what they've done."

At the same time, many Somerset County residents expressed to me their profound gratitude towards the heroes for giving their lives to prevent an even greater tragedy. As a father of three children attending school less than sixty seconds airtime from the crash, I understand that feeling.

Courage After the Crash (SAJ Publishing, 2002) was a memorial to the courage of the heroes and the strength of their families. Additionally, the book was a thank you to all of the thousands of people who, in ways big and small, helped in the aftermath of the crash Quiet Courage: The definitive account of Flight 93 and its aftermath combines the oral histories of Courage After the Crash with those recorded through 2006. To that, I have added details of the 9/11 plot and what occurred on Flight 93. I feel that it is important to have the saga of Flight 93, from the plot to the memorial, all in one book.

This will help readers understand the continuing courageous acts of forty ordinary people.

From the Back Cover

"Having been very close to the 9/11 recovery effort, reading Quiet Courage was an emotionally charged experience for me. Quiet Courage is well-researched. Kashurba reveals many behind the scenes details of Flight 93, its aftermath, and the 9/11 plot." Mark Schweiker, Pennsylvania Governor, 2001-2003

"Sobering , incisive, and captivating. Dr. Kashurba takes the reader into the soul of of one of the most horrendous chapters in American history and tells it with the depth and intensity of a novel." Patrick Picciarelli, author of The Pop Line.

"Dr. Kashurba, in Courage After the Crash, used first-person accounts to help us understand how a rural county in Western Pennsylvania responded to a disaster that, quite literally, fell out of the sky.

Now, in Quiet Courage, Dr. Kashurba brings the story up-to-date with accounts from Flight 93 families and citizens of Somerset County, Pennsylvania, committed to establishing a permanent memorial to the heroes of Flight 93. Overlying these first-hand accounts are the details of what occurred on board UAL 93, the 9/11 plot and the ongoing investigation that are still front-page news.

As with Courage After the Crash, the author will donate his royalties to charity. The Flight 93 Memorial will receive Dr. Kashurba's royalties from Quiet Courage.

This is an American story using American voices showing American values at their best." G. Henry Cook, fund raiser for Flight 93 National Memorial, Stage II Juror, Flight 93 National Memorial, CEO, Somerset Trust Company.

"Quiet Courage presents new insights into the post 9/11 events that have helped shape the landscape of Somerset County. It is an account of the passion and determination of a new collective family that was established between the families of Flight 93 and the local community in order to permanently memorialize the loss of 40 remarkable heroes." Gordon Felt, brother of passenger Ed Felt, Charter Board Member, Families of Flight 93, Inc., Treasurer, Families of Flight 93, Inc.

"His meticulous research and first hand experience has make Dr. Kashurba an authority on Flight 93 and its aftermath in Somerset County. Kashurba has worked to ensure that this important historical event will be accurately portrayed for future generations. A wonderful relationship has developed between the community and the families of Flight 93. They have become as one." Edwin Root, cousin of flight attendant Lorraine G. Bay, Board Member, Families of Flight 93, Inc., Stage II Juror, Flight 93 National Memorial, Civil War historian and author of "Isn't This Glorious!"

"I can't thank you enough for the way you treated my parents and my children during out visit to Somerset County following 9/11. We are very appreciative of your efforts immediately following 9/11 and your on-going dedication to both the families and the heroes of Flight 93." Ken Nacke, brother of passenger Louis "Joey" Nacke, II, Flight 93 National Memorial Federal Advisory Commission, Chair, Family Memorial Committee, Flight 93 Memorial Task Force.
