As we struggle to determine the right things to do for ourselves and our children it can be helpful to look at the lessons learned by others.
Straight Rows is a series of short stories about childhood farm life, each with an important life lesson learned by the author, and ideas on how those lessons can be learned in the city.
For those raised on a farm it will bring back many memories. For those whose ancestors were raised on a farm, it will provide an understanding of why they view life as they do. And for those with no family farm background, it will introduce you to a way of thinking that will hopefully help you face the challenges in life and in raising children.

The family farm and community that have been praised as the ideal training for children are rapidly becoming a thing of the past. Most farm children left the farm during the past generation due to the advent of new technology, larger equipment and larger farms. There was simply no room for them to return to the farm. Members of this "Exodus Generation" carry experiences and knowledge that few in our country will every have again. At the time I thought some of the experiences weren't all that pleasent, but as I've grown older I've come to appreciate the long-term benefits they had on my life. As a member of the "Exodus Generation" I felt it would be significant to put those experiences and lessons to print for present and future generations to see.
I was fortunate that my first job after college brought me to a young entrepreneurail advertising executive that was interested in helping his employees grow. He sent us to a class based on the book "Psycho-Cybernetics" by Maxwell Maltz. The book, based on the importance of self image and setting goals for yourself, tweaked my curiosity and lead me to many more self-help type books. As I was reading them, I always had the feeling that somehow I already knew what they were saying. It wasn't until I had the opportunity to slow down my career that I had the time to analyze those feelings and realize that most of the self-help book lessons had already been learned by me through my experience of being raised on a farm
