Del Ray local artist, Angela Scarlis, who writes under the name of Angela Goldemund. Angela is an internationally known artist and writer. In presenting her poems, Angela seeks to invite her audience to see beyond the dark, to see beyond conventional means of survival. She invites us to come together and to recognize the power that each one of us has in determining the means by which we protect those we love and that which we cherish in our everyday living. Locally, in autumn 2002 she mounted a provocative instillation at the Del Ray Artisans Gallery. Angela's powerful and impassioned performance introduced her audience to the themes in her new book of poetry, The Gray Notebook Of A Stranger. Much of the poetry was written following the catastrophe of September 11, although some had been written earlier when Angel's sensitivities had been heightened, while living abroad in her husband's native Greece. Angela found that as she tried to fathom the repercussions of September 11, that powerful images from her past emerged, reminding her of a time when her inner resources were not yet set, a time that although long past, was suddenly ejected from her subconscious in her attempt to move forward. Angela's poems are a reflection of that journey. Narrated in both her native German and in English, her images span the spectrum of emotions. The veering back and forth of a spoken tongue that may be known or unknown to her audience, effectively communicates the light and dark of our personal journey and the dialogue she wishes to ellicit.
