The photographs in Hal Eastman's new book, Natural Dance, celebrate the freedom, energy and power of women dancers as they spontaneously explore their personal inner sense of movement in intuitive harmony with the natural beauty around them. At the same time, these extraordinary images capture the liberating spirit of dance and the dance rhythms that permeate the natural world. Created by an unusual time-lapse photographic technique, an effect generated wholly with the camera, the images evoke late 19th and early 20th century prints.

Hal Eastman is relatively new to both photography and dance. In 1995, seeking change from a long corporate career and open to new experiences, he began a serious study of photography. His initial intrigue with rhythmic forms in nature sparked an interest in dance and eventually led to the idea of integrating dance movement with natural settings in time-lapsed, abstract photographs. The images are created by a combination of dance movement, camera movement, shutter speed, and light play with film in a manual 35mm camera. Hal lives in Boise, Idaho, and Carmel, California, with his wife, Jacque.

"Eastman’s photographs of women dancers in nature are remarkable in their capacity to capture a moment of dance . . ." -- Janice Ross, dance historian, Stanford University
Eastman's photo essay celebrates the fortitude, the resilience, the passion and the freedom of female dancers to break free. . . -- Lisa Crawford Watson, Monterey County Herald, June 17, 2003
These images come to my mind unbidden; the beautiful flowing tone of them, the high and consistent tone of them. -- Sam Abell, National Geographic photographer, teacher and author
