Current transformers (CTs) are used throughout the world as current transducers for protective relays in industrial, commercial, and utlity applications. Standard ratings and application guides deal with the steady-state sine wave behavior of current transformers. Despite the use of recommended rules applied to avoid transient saturation, it always occurs in certain critical relay applications. Analyzing and Applying Current Transfomers is a reference book written for professionals concerned with the application andf operation of CTs used as current transducers for input to protective relays in electrical power systems. This book presents transformer concepts that provide the fundamentals to understand the non-linear characteristics, accuracy ratings, and transient behavior of current transformers.

Stanley (Stan) E. Zocholl has a B.S. and M.S. in Electrical Engineering from Drexel University. He is an IEEE Life Fellow and a member of the Power Engineering Society and the Industrial Application Society. He is also a member of the Power System Relaying Committee and past chair of the Relay Input Sources Subcommittee. Stan joined Schweitzer Engineering Laboratories in 1991 in the position of Distinguished Engineer. He was with ABB Power T&D Company Allentown (formerly ITE, Gould, BBC) from 1947-1991, where he held various engineering positions, including Director of Protection Technology. His biography appears in Who’s Who in America. He holds over a dozen patents associated with power system protection and using solid state and microprocessor technology and is the author of numerous IEEE and Protective Relay Conference papers. He received the Best Paper Award of the 1988 Petroleum and Chemical Industry Conference and the Power System Relaying Committee’s Distinguished Service Award in 1991.
This reference book is written for anyone who uses or specifies current tranformers for use with protective relays. --Jack Smith, Technical Editor, Plant Engineering Magazine, December 2004
