Michelle Hurley thinks she's conquered the hole inside called loneliness by giving every waking moment to her nursing career. She's done this intentionally and with ruthless rationality, and it seems to be working. So when Melissa's reckless sister, Nicole, drops her two kids into Michelle's care, Michelle resents it. Her resentment rings true, but gradually her ingrained nursing skills awaken her maternal instinct. Refreshingly, Nicole doesn't become any more responsible, though the novel is predictable in many ways: the kids are cute, and by giving love, Michelle finds it. Even so, Slack's feel for her Ozarks setting and her knack for drawing minor characters very nearly turns this romance into a fine realistic novel.
