Moser's thorough understanding of the process, combined with intriguing juxtapositions of layouts, no-nonsense comments and original insight make for an entertaining and useful book. Chapters range from Grid Systems to Covers, Logos and Inside Pages, Types of Page and Themes, even a section on the design of magazine spines - illustrated with over 1500 examples from international magazines, drawn from the author's personal collection of over one million magazines! A great reference books for all graphic designers and art directors.

Horst Moser is a graphic designer, art director and principal of Independent Medien-Design in Munich, Germany, with a design team of 20 people specializing in editorial design for magazines and books as well as corporate design. His work has won numerous awards in Europe and America,; Véronique Vienne, (Introduction), a former magazine art director, writes about design, fashion and cultural trends. Her critical essays on design have appeared in magazines such as Metropolis, Graphis, Print, Communication Arts, Eye, American Photo, and AIGA Journal. She is the author of many books including the "Something to be Desired: Essays on Design" (Graphis) and the best-selling "The Art of Doing Nothing" (Clarkson Potter).
"[Horst Moser] did what I wish I had done: He offered his extensive collection of contemporary magazines to readers in the form of a book. Written to appeal to designers as well as non-designers-editors, entrepreneurs, marketers- Surprise Me is not encumbered with insider's jargon. His thorough understanding of the process, combined with intriguing juxtapositions of layouts, no-nonsense comments, and original insight make for an entertaining read-as surprising fresh as the subject matter he is presenting." (From the introduction by Véronique Vienne).
