"C’mon!" Isabella grabbed Porkita’s hand and led her on tiptoe from the stairway. "We have to get out of the palace without being seen. Do you know a way out?" "No," answered Porkita. "I think there might be a door at the end of that hallway, but I’m not sure." "Let’s try it," suggested Isabella. They crept across the kitchen slowly, always alert for any sign of the soldiers. They made it to the hallway and then bolted down the short hall toward the only door in sight. Just as they reached the door, they heard the heavy clatter of boots in the kitchen behind them. Isabella grabbed the doorknob and tore the door open. She pushed Porkita through it and followed her, only to slam right into Porkita’s back. They weren’t outside as they had hoped. They were in a large room filled from ceiling to floor with stored food. They had stumbled into the palace pantry. Isabella pulled the door shut behind them and started to search wildly for any way out. Porkita stood staring at the shelves and shelves of food, including one whole wall of shelves filled with ears of corn. The sound of the soldiers’ boots coming down the hall shook Porkita out of her trance. She began helping Isabella look for a way out. As the soldiers came closer, Isabella pulled Porkita behind a row of shelves. Two soldiers burst through the door and glanced quickly around the room. Not seeing the girls, they exited the room and tramped back down the hall. Isabella let out her breath, but froze when she heard a loud crunching in the room with her. She slowly turned her head toward the sound, only to witness Porkita biting into an ear of corn. "Porkita! How can you eat?" Isabella whispered. "Aren’t you afraid?" "Of course I am!" Porkita responded softly. "And when I’m afraid, I get hungry."
