Synopsis
Sometimes your biggest enemy is yourself... Looking back, in 1964 on the surface the Girty family appeared to be a typical lower middle class Detroit family, with two hard working parents and three children living in the home. The family went to church every Sunday, sat down together regularly for family dinners and the children were taught and expected to be well mannered and respectful. However, behind the doors of the Girty household was a pieced together blended family situation with disciplinary tactics that at age twelve, the youngest son did not like nor understand. As a result he began to use drugs and alcohol as a pacifier to help him both tolerate and escape his family situation. Portrait of a Troubled Child is the story of a young-man's turn from God and how his decision to live worldly brought him to his knees, and how he triumphed over obstacles to make the greatest change in his life!

About the Author
Curtis Michael Girty is a native Detroiter and grew up on its eastside in the Mack and Van Dyke area. During his younger formative years Curtis had adjustment difficulties which eventually led him to alcohol and drugs as a means to escape. He took to the street life hoping to find success and wealth in the drug game while being actively addicted for 18 years. After becoming frustrated and tired of the going nowhere of the street life and dope game he decided to seek the Lord. Although raised in the church, he d wavered in his commitment, but finally made the decision that he wanted a new way of life. At age 30, he entered a drug treatment program at S.H.A.R. House (Self-Help Addicted Rehabilitation), there he learned to take responsibility for his actions along with facing his realities in life and has been drug and alcohol free for over 30 years! Excited about the rebirth given to him by God, in 1984 Curtis was appointed to chair the first inner city Narcotics Anonymous (NA) meeting at Robinwood Clinic and then another meeting at Northwest General Hospital, which was his first effort in giving back to the community. His inspiration to write began in 1996 and evolved into his first book entitled, Ebony Pearls of Wisdom, which is a poetry book that he self-published in 2003. His life experiences were the leading inspiration for his poetry. He has also been a public speaker with the Detroit Public Schools and several community organizations. Curtis is a member of New Prospect Missionary Baptist Church in Detroit, where the Rev. Dr. Wilma R. Johnson, is the pastor. He is active in the Youth Mentoring Program and also the Transportation Ministry. He retired from the City of Detroit after 34 years of employment. He has been married to his wife, Jeanette for 29 years and their combined family consist of three adult children and twin grandchildren. In addition to writing, Curtis enjoys bowling, billiards, scratch baking and collecting movies and music. More than anything Curtis enjoys the ability that God has given him to connect and influence young people. Writing his memoir has been a two year labor of love which he considers his ultimate effort and gift to others. Curtis favorite scripture is Philippians 4:13, I can do all things through Christ, who strengthens me. NKJV
