In the past, when I watched a forty-foot motor home pull into a campground I always used to say "here come the pretend campers." Some of these folks erected satellite dishes, and disturbed the rustic beauty of the forest with the sounds of generators and blaring tvs and radios. This wasn t camping! Why didn t they just leave their noise at home? I wondered why they ever bothered to leave home in the first place.

To a certain extent, camping is about roughing it. I don t mean the part about going without a shower for three days. What I mean is enjoying the outdoors. Camping the easy, simple way. I love a warm, cozy sleeping bag and tent; that is a good economical way to enjoy nature! Tent camping is a healthy way to get away from all the electronic paraphernalia that inundates our society. It makes you want to get back to the simple way of life: cowboy style.

I have visited motor home showrooms, and I found RV owners who enjoyed many practical features in their rigs things that I was missing.

I hate to admit it, but after hitting forty, the RV concept began looking good. It became even more appealing the closer I got to the half-century mark.

Now I consider RV camping to be just a different way to enjoy God s great outdoors. RV camping continues to increase in popularity. Today, over 9.3 million RVs are registered in over 50 states; RV ownership increased by 25% from 1990 2000.

In 1998, after years of backpacking and tent camping, I decided to change my method of camping and jump on the RV bandwagon. I resisted the hefty price tags and excessive luxuries of a full sized RV; but I was in my mid-forties, and I wanted a few more creature comforts.

I went on a two year quest to see what the RV industry had to offer, and I was pleasantly surprised with what I found. I initially ended up with a basic pop-up camper.

Before Susan and I married in 1990, I warned her that I had an addiction to camping. She knows camping is a wholesome activity that I love. I camp often; but never quite achieve the 10 15 trips per year which would be a wonderful goal to achieve. I begin camping each year in mid to late March, and camp through October.

In my single days, packing for a camping was a 15 minute job.

Family camping is a new and different ball game because much more gear is required. When we first started camping as a family, we usually came home tired and cranky, and I was the crankiest one in the family!

Who did all the unpacking and cleaning the gear? Yours truly, you guessed it! I found we were camping less every year, but I wouldn t allow it to stay this way for long.

If only I had a camper, not only could I keep everything packed in it, but I could make things more comfortable for the family. That was the answer to my dilemma.
