Maria Rifo first came to the US at age 58. While working here as a VISTA volunteer, she met Cesar Chavez. Taken with his person and his mission, she signed on to work with him and the United Farm Workers, hoping to learn things she could take back to help her people in Chile. But she never went back. She worked as secretary to Chavez for 12 years. In 1980 she left the Union and came to Sonoma County. She immediately began projects to help the Spanish speaking population find their own strength in the local scene--political, social, and economic. This is Maria's story--in her words and in the words of the people she worked with. Maria was doing her work right up to her death in 2006, a few days short of her 99th birthday.
