The worst-case scenario, Arnold tells us, is being fired. Highlighting some chilling numbers--nine million people are out of work and 500,000 have been fired since January--he explains how to prepare for losing one's job and how to cope with the fear that "precedes it immediately before it happens." Even more appealing, he offers advice on how to avoid being fired. Often using personal anecdotes about his many years in the trenches as both employee and manager, Arnold provides information about common and obscure employee concerns, answering some questions that usually aren't even thought of until disaster strikes. In a time when corporate layoffs are frighteningly common, this book and others like it will find a hungry readership. But will^B Arnold's advice work? It seems less likely to help the rank-and-file hang on to their jobs than to cushion the shock of landing. George Cohen
