Grade 6-9-This exciting, action-packed graphic novelization based on the wildly popular combat video game sets up the characters and circumstances. Ryo discovers Master Gouken in a heinous slump at the dojo; perhaps a rogue student or an evil and fierce enemy assaulted him. As Ryo sets off to investigate, the other characters are involved in subplots that eventually bring them all together. The plot is predictable and a bit trite, but it will appeal to the book's intended audience. The high-impact drawings follow the manga traditions and style. Written characterization is slightly forgone since the characters are well known from the other licensed products. Lots of time is spent developing Ryo as a noble hero whose internal conflict is mirrored by the external fights he faces daily. The appeal of a street fighter to reluctant teen readers will certainly be a good bridge to more substantial material.
