Born in 1928, Uncle Ed remembers stories of hard times and hope as he experienced life on Firesteel Road. Uncle Ed tells the tales of a town of immigrants who struggled as best they could to make a home and raise a family in Ontonagon during the worst economic downturn in our nation’s history. These are stories of a town and its culture, the lives of those who spent winters cutting lumber in the vast tracts of forest, traveled when there was twelve feet of snow in the yard after an April storm, and sold furs they’d trapped to Sears and Roebuck for a nickel apiece. The Great Depression put even more strain on the local economy, but families worked hard, survived and even prospers. Uncle Ed has recounted stories of the men who logged the forests, snow drifts that covered houses and what it sounded like when a young boy threw a handful of .22 caliber bullets into the school's pot-belly stove. He describes tractors made from cars, driving a Model T to Detroit and taking the ferry across to Mackinac, and what impressions a young man got from sneaking into the Dance Hall.
