Don Allison published A Step Beyond: A Definitive Guide to Ultrarunning in December of 2002. Now in its fifth edition, the book has sold more than 6,000 copies in more than 25 countries around the world. Don is also the former publisher of UltraRunning Magazine and co-founder of Coolrunning.com. A competitive runner for more than 30 years, Don has completed 55 marathons, with a personal best of 2:35:30, in Boston in 1988. In addition, Don has completed several ultramarathons, Ironman triathlons, and in 2006 cycled nearly 4,000 miles across the U.S.A. As a race director, Don originated and directed the Bay State Marathon in Massachusetts, the Breakers Marathon in Rhode Island, and most recently, the Eastern States 20 Mile in New Hampshire. Away from running, Don is a board certified veterinary technician.
At last, Ultrarunning publishers has put together a complete book comprising the sport. The knowledge and humor of the sport is combined in one volume, which no student of the sport should miss. This book can be used as a work of reference, a source of inspiration, and mirror of this diverse sport. --Andy Milroy, author and historian
