Gr. 4-6. In a story-collection follow-up to WJHC: On the Air (2003), the multiethnic cast of high-school radio-station buffs seems to be enacting a slyly ironic send-up of comic book characters Veronica and Archie. In the first story, a fame-hungry teacher is put in charge of the radio station; in the next, the teenage staff competes in a survivor-style "reality" program. The other tales involve jealousy played out against the background of a celebrity fashion show and a trip to a rock concert, the group's reward for placing first in the survival contest. Red-haired Janey, the radio station nerve center, is impetuous; Asian American Ciel is avant-garde and trendy; rich girl Tara is blonde and wears pearls; beatnik "The Skate" wears cool shades; Latino Sandy is an electronics genius; African American Drayton takes on any challenge, though he doesn't always succeed. The sharp, bright colors and absurd costumes emphasize the silly, light tone of the episodes, so readers won't be inclined to take the multitude of stereotypes--including ancient, crabby school bureaucrats and security-guard goons, as well as the kids themselves--too seriously. This is truly a cartoon show on paper; there's not much about radio programming or issues this time around. Francisca Goldsmith

Grade 4 Up–Take a cast of high school students pulled together by a common interest (in this case a school-supported radio station) and throw them into various wacky situations (appearing on a reality TV show, crashing a fashion show, going to a rock concert), keep it clean and unchallenging and you'll have WHJC. However, while the ethnic diversity of the characters is certainly welcome, the teens remain flat and underdeveloped. They are primarily defined by their interests and are generally void of inner conflict and complex motivation. That said, for readers seeking pure entertainment at the level of television sitcoms, with similarly unrealistic plots and characterization, this title is just the ticket. The design is good, with clear lettering and format, and a fun sense of color. Overall, this is a decent introduction to graphic novels.–Dawn Rutherford, Kings County Library System, Bellevue, WA
