Making sense of surgery Couple become publishers to ease understanding By Craig Wolf Poughkeepsie Journal Thursday, November 29, 2007 There are doctors with good bedside manners. But here are a couple who bring a book, too - their own. Dr. Kenneth K. Hansraj, surgeon, is the author of "Bloodless Spine Surgery." His wife, Dr. Marcia Griffin-Hansraj, a doctor of osteopathic medicine, is the president of a new publishing company, Dee Dee LLC, formed to put out books of this genre. "If you decide to go for surgery, this is how you prepare," Hansraj said. Essentially, Hansraj has provided patients with a clear, readable preview of why they need surgery, just what's going to happen during it and who the players are in the operating room. Hansraj and Griffin-Hansraj own New York Spine Surgery and Rehabilitation Medicine, in the Town of Poughkeepsie adjacent to Saint Francis Hospital, where surgeries are performed. The first book is about Hansraj's own specialty, spine surgery, and was printed recently and efforts are now being made to distribute it. There's a special focus on Hansraj's preferred technique, which involves minimizing blood loss and averting transfusions. This is sought by people of certain religions, including Jehovah's Witnesses, and increasingly by others who just don't like the idea of losing blood or using someone else's. Future titles are being considered for "The Specialist Series" on other medical topics written by doctors who specialize in them. Griffin-Hansraj said the basic approach is to publish books that explain typical procedures in simple language, photos and graphics aimed for the ordinary person, not the medical professionals. One technique is to have some of those ordinary readers, including teenagers, preview the books. "We wanted to cover the spectrum ... to make it readable for lay people," she said. Lowell Woodcock, 48, of Hopewell Junction, has been on the surgery table at Saint Francis Hospital as Hansraj's patient after several other surgeries for back injuries. He attributes the injuries to unloading heavy packages from trucks at his former job. He's now disabled. Positive reviews Two weeks before his procedure was done, he read Hansraj's book. "It not only answers a lot of questions for the patient, but I think along with the actual pictures and descriptive thoroughness, you could easily identify," said Woodcock, "even if you were not one that was familiar with a medical background." Ed Smith Jr. of New Paltz, who was injured years ago as a longshoreman when he slipped on a boat, is another patient of Hansraj who has read the book. "The book was right to the point," Smith said. "It's sort of like a navigable map for surgery. It's basically an outline of what's going to transpire during your two, three or several hours of surgery. It's just explaining, in layman's terms, the entire procedure." Hansraj said there is plenty of medical literature for professionals but a dearth of good books for patients. He and his wife developed the idea of a layman's series and sought a publisher several years ago. They finally decided to start their own company and do it themselves. The actual printing is done by a Singapore firm. The book covers common spinal conditions, evaluations for surgery, various aspects of the surgical process and equipment that's used, several patient case reports and a glossary. At the last meeting of the American Academy of Minimally Invasive Spinal Medicine & Surgery, Dr. Kenneth K. Hansraj presented a novel book Bloodless Spine Surgery . 118 pages long, this book presented in a big book format takes you from basic concepts of bloodless surgery and into the operating room. The concepts are clearly shown and explained. This book was received with enthusiasm by our academy. This is the next step, a brilliant endeavor, genius and cutting edge were some of the comments made. The book shows the very latest in technology. Minimally invasive access tubes for decompression, operating endoscopes, vertebral balloons and a fully digital operating room are shown. I myself noted, however, the relevance of fusion in the career of Dr. Hansraj. This book with all of its pictures, images and words represent the fusion of the medical and the non-medical. Both worlds will benefit from the concepts displayed. The author fellowship trained in minimally invasive spinal surgery at the California Center For Minimally Invasive Spinal Surgery and traditional open spinal surgery at The Hospital For Special Surgery in New York. In his career Hansraj shows fusion of the minimally invasive world with open, fusion based spinal surgery. Dr. Kenneth Hansraj is well known among us to innovate and be proliferative. His book Bloodless Spine Surgery is a worthy and useful contribution to the literature. Prof. John C. Chiu, M.D., D.Sc.
