About the Author:
DOUGLAS VAN NOSTRAND, M.D., is the Director of Nuclear Medicine and the Program Director of the Nuclear Medicine Residency Program at Washington Hospital Center and Professor of Medicine, Georgetown University Hospital Center. His specialty is nuclear medicine, and his primary area of interest and expertise is the nuclear medicine diagnosis and treatment of thyroid cancer. He has held numerous academic and medical society positions including Clinical Professor of Radiology and Nuclear Medicine, Uniformed Services University of Health Sciences; past President, Mid-Eastern Society of Nuclear Medicine, Director of Continuing Medical Education Department, and other elected positions of the Medical Staff of Good Samaritan Hospital. He has over 150 articles published and has been the co-editor of seven medical books including the medical textbook entitled Thyroid Cancer, A Comprehensive Guide to Clinical Management. LEONARD WARTOFSKY, M.D., is the Chairman of the Department of Medicine at Washington Hospital Center. His specialty is Endocrinology, and his primary area of interest and expertise is thyroid disease in general and thyroid cancer in particular, for which he is world-renowned. He has held numerous academic and medical society positions including Professor of Medicine, Georgetown University School of Medicine, Professor of Medicine, Uniformed Services University of Health Sciences, and past President of the American Thyroid Association and The Endocrine Society. He also received the Distinguished Educator Award of the Endocrine Society in 2001. He has published over 300 articles and is the editor of the medical textbook entitled Thyroid Cancer, A Comprehensive Guide to Clinical Management and the current Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism. GArY BLOOM, a thyroid cancer survivor, is Co-Founder and Executive Director of ThyCa: Thyroid Cancer Survivors' Association, Inc. He also served as Board Chair, and since 1999 has facilitated the ThyCa Washington, D.C., Support Group. ThyCa is a national nonprofit organization advised by internationally recognized thyroid cancer specialists. ThyCa is dedicated to education, support, and communication for thyroid cancer survivors, families, and friends, as well as awareness for early detection, thyroid cancer research fundraising, and research grants. KANCHAN KULKARNI, M.B.B.S., is the Director of Nuclear Endocrinology in the Division of Nuclear Medicine at Washington Hospital Center and Assistant Professor of Clinical Medicine of Georgetown University School of Medicine. She completed her medical training at the University of Mumbai, India in 1999 and her residency in nuclear medicine at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital in Philadelphia in 2004. She joined Washington Hospital Center in 2006 and has been an author and co-author on multiple articles and abstracts, many related to the use of radioiodine in diagnosis and treatment of thyroid cancer. She is the Associate Director of the Nuclear Medicine physician residency program and is actively involved in the Nuclear Medicine Washington Hospital Center thyroid cancer program.
