Jim Van Pelt's first collection, Strangers and Beggars, was voted one of the Best Books of 2003 by the American Library Association. Now, in this new collection, Van Pelt continues to explore the ever-changing boundaries of science fiction, fantasy and horror. The Last of the O-Forms is an important collection filled with stories that transport us to far-flung worlds and to the harder-to-find inner worlds that define the human condition.

James Van Pelt is a serious writer in the very best sense. His stories are literate, gripping, and meaningful...a far cry from the pabulum that so often passes as genre fiction. Here is a writer who can write rigorous science fiction and Bradburyesque fantasy. He is a fabulist who writes across genres: a writers’ writer...and a readers’ writer. I recommend him to every reader who wants to re-experience the exhilaration and joy of real writing. --Jack Dann
James Van Pelt ws born in 1954 in Akron, Ohio, but grew up in Littleton, Colorado, not too far from Martin Marrietta’s rocket engine testing plant in the Waterton Canyon. When the weather conditions were right, test firings rattled the windows in his house.
He graduated Metro State College in Denver in 1978 with a bachelor’s degree in English and history and a high school teaching certificate. He earned an M.A. in creative writing from the University of California at Davis in 1990. His poetry, non-fiction and stories have appeared in numerous magazines and anthologies, including Asimov’s, Analog, Alfred Hitchcock’s Mystery Magazine, Realms of Fantasy, Talebones and many others. His stories have been reprinted in Gardner Dozois’s Year’s Best Science Fiction, David Hartwell’s Year’s Best Fantasy, and Stephen Jones’s The Mammoth Book of New Horror. "The Last of the O-Forms" was a Nebula finalist in 2004. Other stories have been recommended for Nebula and Stoker awards, and included in both Dozois’s and Ellen Datlow’s year’s best honorable mention lists. In 1999, Van Pelt was a finalist for the John W. Campbell Award for Best New Writer.
Strangers and Beggars, his first collection, was named by the American Library Association as a Best Book for Young Adults. It also was a finalist for the Colorado Blue Spruce Young Adult Book Award.
When he’s not writing, he teaches high school and college English in Grand Junction, Colorado. His wife and three sons have grown accustomed to his long, motionless moments hunched over his laptop, punctuated by wild bursts of typing.
