Author David Gallaher has received multiple Harvey Award nominations and won The Best Online Comic Award for his work on High Moon for DC Comics.
Grade 10 Up-This volume includes different facets of the horror genre with vignettes about werewolves, vampires, mummies, ghosts, and sea creatures in myriad story types such as crime noir, camp, and science fiction. The black-and-white illustrations vary from story to story, depending on the illustrator, from clearly defined to shadowy and indistinct. The quality and age-appropriateness of the stories are also inconsistent: some are acceptable for middle school, while others are more suitable for older high school readers due to adult themes and language. There is no definite beginning or ending (e.g., author, title, title page, or credits) to some of the selections, so it is difficult to tell where one stops and another begins. Ultimately disappointing, this volume is a marginal purchase for public libraries with a large demand for horror graphic novels. Neil Gaiman's "The Sandman" series (DC Comics) or "Horror Classics" (Eureka), edited by Tom Pomplun, are much stronger choices.-Jennifer Feigelman, Plattekill Public Library, Modena, NY
