Maelstrom is a story about a man who is unable to distinguish the real world from the imagined. Something or somebody invade his body and disrupts his entire life. He goes to Dr. Alleyne, an unorthodox practitioner of medicine, for help only to discover that the good doctor is on the take and apparently trying to swindle him. The doctor introduces him to a contraption call the Blue Room, which he discovered in India and brings back to the island with the intention of swindling his patients. He convinces A to give his newly-found contraption a try. To A's surprise the machine calms and soothes him. But the doctor's behavior is both shady and suspicious. So A proceeds with caution. He wanders from the confines of his apartment to friend's houses, on the beach and through the street. They are small creatures who seem to enjoy disturbing his sleep at night. The odd thing about all this is that A is not sure whether or not he is dreaming. He repeatedly dreams about his mother floating on the clouds and wonders why he continues to have this dream. All these strange happenings might well be simply a construct of his imagination. Life goes by and A simply drifts with it not sure whether he is alive or dead.
