Management Strategies and Nervous System Health ― How to Integrate Neurodynamics Within Modern Biopsychosocial Constructs
The Sensitive Nervous System is the classic neurodynamics text. The physical examination of the nervous system is carefully illustrated and explained via hundreds of clear line drawings. Management strategies are introduced and underpinned by neurobiology and clinical reasoning.
The Sensitive Nervous System calls for skilled physical and educational contributions to the management of acute and chronic pain states. If offers a ‘big picture’ approach using best evidence from basic sciences and outcomes data, with plenty of space for individual clinical expertise and wisdom.
One of the most popular David Butler books, The Sensitive Nervous System teaches novel techniques which are instantly applicable and demonstrates how to integrate neurodynamics within modern biopsychosocial constructs.

David Butler, EdD, MPhty, BPhty, MAPA (Hon), is a physiotherapist, an educationalist, a researcher and clinician. He currently serves as an adjunct associate professor at the University of South Australia and an honored member of the Australian Physiotherapy Association. He is best known as an educationalist and his current focus is on adult conceptual change, diagnostic and therapeutic metaphors and pain storytelling. Internationally known and respected as a lively speaker and writer, David is capable of transforming the most turgid of modern pain sciences into instantly relevant, clinically applicable information.
David Butler, PT, is in high demand as a lecturer, educator and an accomplished author. He has written and co-written many publications, blending manual therapy skills and neurobiological evidence and clinical decision-making skills for the management of acute and chronic pain states.
The years since the publication of David Butler's Mobilisation of the Nervous System have seen the rapid growth and influence of the powerful and linked forces of the neurobiological revolution, the evidence-based movement, restless patients and clinicians.
In The Sensitive Nervous System Butler has brought together the key elements of best current practice for manual therapists and presented them within an immediately accessible clinical framework. He encourages an evidence-based approach, underpinned by basic science. In this book, his aim is to demystify the scientific processes behind neurodynamics and the pain revolution and give therapists practical tools for clinical use.
More than giving recipes for treatment in the clinic, The Sensitive Nervous System encourages movement-based therapists of any persuasion to view their work, patients and methods through fresh eyes. Through his own rich clinical and teaching experience, Butler invites clinicians to be inventive, scientific and methodical in order to benefit all stakeholders in the patient's outcome.
Sometimes, to be able to truly and objectively look at what we do, it is necessary to view it from a different vantage point – to see things from above and to see ourselves as part of a bigger picture. History is one way to do this. In figure 1.1 I have shown my perspective on the origins, development and what appears to be the beginning of a merging of the major systems of western orthodox manual therapy. This representation will hopefully create discussion and argument, but its main purpose is to provide readers with a new vantage point from which to view the movement based therapies, to contemplate the future and to create the “big picture” framework for the material in this book.
