Zashin, M.D., is a clinical professor of medicine, Division of Rheumatology, at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical School, Dallas, Texas. Review:
Dr Zashin has done a fantastic job with this book, introducing natural treatments for arthritis. His writings seem to be based on good clinical data. Dr Zashin is a nationally recognized leader in the field of arthritis. He practices here in Dallas, where he holds an academic appointment at the medical school, and where he has received many awards for his care of patients. I have had the privilege of referring my arthritis patients to him, and have seen excellent results with his treatments. Quite honestly, I have never received so many compliments from patients about a single specialist as I have about Dr Zashin. As a primary care physician I am a big believer in exploring all of the options available to patients, and Dr Zashin does this very nicely. Some of these treatments may be used alone or as a supplement to traditional treatments. I have bought several copies of this book, one of which I sent to a family member who has implemented these easy treatments. I have placed the other copies in my waiting room and exam rooms for patients to explore. I look forward to Dr Zashin's continued innovations in the field of Rheumatology and Arthritis. Can eating tart cherries help your pain from arthritis? This seemingly innocuous, yet paradoxical question opens the door to a vast world of the latest science on nutrition and arthritis -- all of it explored here. (Btw, the answer to this and similar questions re vitamin D, glucosamine, ASU, SAM-e, magnesium, etc.: quite possibly.) This book is written from a very deep well of experience, two, in fact. Bob Marley once said: "who feels it, knows it, mon." Surely true here. The author (Carol Eustice) has logged 35+ grueling years of carrying the weight of her own arthritis, including a couple decades writing about it for about.com, and before that, other online services, reaching millions. She was previously published, as well, as an author on this subject ("The Everything Guide to Arthritis"). A nationally recognized practitioner in the arthritis field, based in Dallas, Dr. Scott Zashin adds the technical, and often, biochemical, muscle here, too. So what is the conclusion, then, of this highly knowledgeable pair, one who has consulted and compiled for years with a vast range of medical experts around the world, as well as countless patients? And the second, a medical doctor with many years experience in treating patients directly? It is this: You, dear reader, own your own health, not your physician, and not the drug companies, and not the claims' makers. You are an incredibly complex construction, different from every other human, and what works for your neighbor, may or may not work for you. But some new solutions do work, and they will often be worth trying. So stay open-minded, keep the lines of communication to your physician open, and if the spirit so moves, try a new modality over a period of time, keep records, and see if it helps. In the case of eating things like tart cherries, the treatment can be fun -- which in the world of arthritis treatment, is not always the case. Hats off to the authors here for tackling this list of new things in the media about treatment of this disease. And for keeping an open mind. Very helpful. --John A Sarkett Amazon.com reader

After reading this wonderfully informative book I found myself practicing some of the ideas. Tart cherry juice every night before bed has helped to reduce some of my inflammation. Adding more Vitamin D and sunshine has improved my bone density. Rheumatoid arthritis is a horrible disease and the treatments are harsh. Here in this book the ideas and options are covered as to which natural products might help some of us to feel a degree of relief from our daily pain and inflammation. In these pages you may just find something to help your improve comfort. No one case is the same, what medication works for me might not work for you but here we get a good background on natural foods and supplements and if I can find a 5 to 10% relief by trying some of these, you can bet I have. This is a well done, well documented collection of studies come together to help us choose what can help. Every where you turn is a snake oil salesman promising a cure. I actually had someone trying to convince me to that gin soaked raisins worked to cure arthritis. I think that person overdosed themselves. Another tells me rolling oil around in my mouth for 20 minutes a day will cure anything from arthritis to hair loss and . Do yourself a favor and read what Carol Eustice and Scott Zashin,M.D. have to say. I enjoyed it very much as well as Carol's writings on About.com. --ihope Amazon.com reader
