About the Author

AC LEWIS has extensive experience in many worlds of music. In the classical world, he worked as Substitute Principal Timpanist and Percussionist with the San Francisco Symphony, the New Zealand Symphony, the Mexico City Symphony, and the National Orchestra of Colombia. You can hear him as Timpanist on the San Francisco Symphonies recordings, of Beethoven s 1st and 3rd Symphonies, Schubert s Unfinished, and the Grammy award winning recording of Orff's Carmina Burana. In the Contemporary Chamber Music world, he worked with John Adams, Steve Reich, Elliot Carter, Frank Zappa, Charles Wourinen, Wayne Peterson, Lou Harrison, Pierre Boulez, and others. Equally at home in the Jazz and Rock worlds as a Drummer and Percussionist, he has played with Ritchie Havens, Ray Charles, Ella Fitzgerald, worked on Broadway in New York, and has been a member of numerous rock bands, sharing the stage with Moby Grape and the Grateful Dead. He also led the A. C. Lewis Jazz trio and the group Deep Hip Pocket. As a soloist he's performed concerti, given marimba recitals, including a solo Marimba tour in South America. The Juilliard Orchestra featured him as Cimbalom soloist in Hary Janos by Kodaly. In 1982 he wrote and performed a concerto for Percussion and Orchestra, receiving a terrific review from the New York Times. His roots are in ethnic and World music. He began drumming on home made conga drums, then Tabla, then traveled the world studying music in Europe, North Africa, Turkey, Central and South America, Bali, and India. He has been teaching Drumset and Percussion for 35 years, and teaching rhythm seminars for 12. Lewis has a Bachelors from San Francisco Conservatory of Music, another Bachelors and a Masters degree from the Juilliard School, and a postgraduate diploma from the Mannes College of Music. He presently lives, teaches and performs as conductor, violinist, pianist, guitarist, and percussionist, in Sun Valley, Idaho.
